A Taylor Swift lookalike caused a frenzy among Swifties who thought the singer herself was in the stands at Kansas City’s Major League Soccer game over the weekend.
On Saturday, April 5, Kelley Thrasher — a Swift impersonator who attends Kansas City sports games and other area events dressed as the 35-year-old pop star — was seated in a suite with friends watching Sporting Kansas take on St. Louis.
Thrasher looked undeniably like Swift: she was dressed in a tan trench coat, with her long, dark blonde hair styled identically to the singer’s, complete with a heavy fringe. Completing the look with Swift’s signature red lip, young fans in the crowd began screaming with excitement and yelling Swift’s name, footage captured in Thrasher’s friend’s Instagram video from the game. Thrasher waved back at the fans, including a group who were jumping up and down in excitement.
The “Taylor” sighting wasn’t just limited to the soccer stadium — grainy photos immediately began ripping their way through social media, with even fan accounts falling for Thrasher’s impersonation.
In her Instagram video from the Saturday soccer match, Thrasher’s friend explained how it all went down, noting she and her crew even wound up needing “security escorts” amid the ruckus.
“Still laughing at the chaos last night brought,” Thrasher’s pal captioned the footage, which included close-up clips of Thrasher dressed in her Swift-esque fit.
“We were just there to celebrate our girl @amberleigh.masters birthday… but bring Taylor Swift’s lookalike to an SKC game and suddenly you need security escorts and end up in the stadium’s secret speakeasy with the players after the game 😂,” she continued. “@sportingkc won—so she’s clearly the good luck charm.”
Ultimately, Thrasher’s friend explained: “No, it wasn’t actually Taylor (but the crowd & my DMs definitely thought so) 😂. My kids think I’m the coolest mom ever because I’m “friends with Taylor Swift”—and honestly, I’m not correcting them.”
Swift’s own connection to Kansas City, of course, is through boyfriend Travis Kelce — the three-time Super Bowl-winning tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. As the “Maroon” singer attended every home game of the Chiefs’ season last year — and has been spotted with Kelce, 35, at other sporting events — it’s not hard to see why fans thought the real Swift could have been at the MLS game on Saturday.
As for Thrasher’s own take on the commotion, she revealed via Instagram on Monday, April 7, that it the soccer game wasn’t the only event she attended that weekend posing as Swift.
“2 suites in 24 hours. VIP Love Story-but make it sports,” she captioned a video of herself impersonating Swift at both a hockey game as well as the soccer match.
“Hockey? Soccer?” Thrasher —whose Instagram bio reads “Kansas City's official Taylor Swift Doppelganger” — added, paraphrasing Swift’s “Anti-Hero.” “It's me, hi, I'm the fan, it's me.”
